i wanted to thank you too :D i’m gonna buy a labrador in a few months, and i want to be proud of him/ her. that’s why i must do my homework and get as much information (about dog training) as i can. i realise that if i want a good dog i have to be a good owner, and your videos are the best solutions.
i don’t think you have time to view all the comments but, anyway, THANK YOU!

Great video. I had my dog doing heel fairly consistently after only 10 minutes.

Do not give your doberman the reward (food or sth. else) right when she sits by your side. Always but slowly increase the time the dog needs to stay at your side until it gets the reward. Give the treat while saying “release” or whatever you want. I hope it’ll work out for you. Have fun training!

amen. took my doberman about a week to finally catch on to the leash now she knows! whats weird is that it only took her 10 minutes to learn sit!

  12. 12 wolfydan121 Dec 1st, 2009 at 6:45 am

i started with basics(come, sit, shake hands and drop) at around 9 weeks. just train in teeny sessions to keep his attention, and use positive reinforcement mostly at that age, just like with small children. by 3 months he had them down pat, and i could start on slightly tougher things. but, saying that, different dogs have different iq’s and willingness to please,

I have been teaching this to my 4 month old doberman and she does the finish heel, but she does not stay at my side unless I give her the command to stay. Anyone have any advice on how to make her stay until I release her?

3 month should be alright for you to start any dog training

  15. 15 kingsmountainview Dec 1st, 2009 at 8:30 am

3 months is about the earliest you really want to start. just don’t expect results overnight. puppies are very easily distracted and don’t really retain much training until about 18-20weeks, but it’s okay to start at 12-15weeks w/ obd. training.

NEVER apply a sharp tug to a Gentle Leader! It is NOT meant for that. Better to simply stop. When the dog returns to loose leash, resume your walk. May take you 30 minutes to walk a block, but he will learn.

Its important if you are walking in a crowded or traffic heavy area with your dog.. for their safety. I use this command on the way to a walking area near my house. The only way to get there is to use a side street, even though it has limited traffic I dont risk my German Shepherds safety by having him walk feely on a lead.

It’s also useful when trying to distract from something harmful or keep others away (for example if your pet doesnt like strangers or other dogs).

When i started to train my dog, i never had to do the half way mark with the treat. I actually trained him on the military heel. And after he mastered that he automatically went around my back to the sit by the side. So i can be at a distance now and command heel he’ll run around back and sit next to me. But the thing is i would like him to do the military heel instead can you make a vid on how to train the dog to do that.I kinda forgot lol.Good vid man

It was originally used for hunting with a retriever. You’d want your dog right on your hip while walking so it didn’t scare up game prematurely. This only introduces to dog to getting into the original position. A truly heeled dog will follow you on your hip as well.

And what you do when your dog is not interested in any treat or food when going out?

I recently saw a video where when your dog is pulling to plant your feet and have the dog come back, in the course of a 30 min walk I had my dog heeling and when she would pull I would plant my feet and make her come back the exact way he demonsrated.
